GSA HOMEPAGE
GUIDING PURPOSE OF
POMFRET's GENDER AND SEXUALITY ALLIANCE
"GSA" stands for Gender and Sexuality Alliance. We are an open door, open minded, open hearted LGBTQ awareness group on campus. We seek to create a safe environment and prevent bullying of LGBTQ members within the Pomfret community. We seek to educate the community about the rights and perspectives of LGBTQ people. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend our bi weekly meetings and seasonal events throughout the year. In the words of Bayard Rustin, we seek to be "angelic trouble makers" in the name of social justice.
What does GSA do? We gather to discuss issues, feelings, experiences surrounding equality for the LGBTQ community. We serve as a safe space for anyone who seeks open minded listeners or seekers of social justice - gay OR straight, male OR female, cisgender OR transgender. We collectively celebrate, explore and ponder what it means to fully be yourself and celebrate, explore, and ponder what it takes for others to be their truest self. Our meetings fluctuate between events in the headlines to personal anecdotes to community wide discussions about gender, identity, sexual orientation. Our goal is to help Pomfret rise above homophobia and transphobia. In the spring of 2016, we changed our acronym from "Gay Straight Alliance" to "Gender and Sexuality Alliance" to be more intentionally inclusive.
What don't we do? We don't talk about sex. We don't talk about porn. We don't talk about personal crushes.
How does GSA make a mark on Pomfret? Our biggest "season" is spring. We host a chapel service in April for Day of Silence. We host alumni, students and faculty for a Flipped Panel in May. We send GSA reps to the SDLC conference on Diversity in January. We invite anyone from the community to participate in our Project Pomfret period about LGBTQ Activism for 2 weeks. We've written for the school newspaper. We’re keen on having our own radio show. We partner with the Classic Film Club. We hang out for good food and games. We attend the True Colors Conference at the University of Connecticut in March. We attend Interscholastic Rainbow Dances at neighborhood schools. We sell "queer gear" such as t-shirts, mugs, ribbons, and pins in order to fundraise.
